Julian Crane and Equipment
A Brief History
Julian Crane and Equipment (JC&E) has been serving the New England construction market since for over 60 years. Founded in 1938 by Louis Julian, the company has evolved through three generations to be a leading provider of Construction Elevators and Mast Climbing Work Platforms. JC & E is also the proud dealer for the Linden Comansa range of Tower Cranes for the North East.
JC & E has been fortunate to combine the stability of a family owned company with the capacity to adapt to the constantly changing demands of the Construction Industry. In 1938, the prime focus of the company was road construction and mobile cranes. In the 60s and 70s, JC & E serviced the industry’s need for concrete equipment and placement through its wholly owned subsidiaries of Quipco and Advanced Concrete Placement. 1965 also saw the company move into the Construction Elevator field, the back bone of its current operations. Mast Climbers were a very successful addition made in the 1990s.
JC & E is signatory with four unions, National Elevator Constructors, International Union of Operating Engineers, International Association of Ironworkers and Massachusetts Laborers. Our partnership with these organizations has been a key element in JC & E’s on-going success. The constructing elevators require a composite crew of 2 elevator constructors, 3 ironworkers and a crane operator for installation and dismantle. Operating engineers run the hoist, once installed and inspected by the State Department of Public Safety. The elevator constructors maintain and repair the elevators. Crews of 2 to 3 laborers install the work platforms, with crane assistance.
The typical construction elevator customers are large general contractors. These elevators are used on high rise buildings, both for new construction and renovation of existing buildings. Most rentals last from six to twelve months. Although Julian Crane & Equipment Corp. has rented through-out the northeast the majority of rentals are in the New England vicinity. Since its introduction into our fleet under the guidance of Robert Julian in 1965, the construction elevator has been highly valued by contractors, workers and union management. Julian Crane & Equipment Corp. has an on-going program for upgrading and maintaining hoists resulting in a smoother running machine, which costs less to maintain.
The work platforms are rented to general contractors as well as specific trades such as masons and glass installers. The work platform is a multi trade machine that provides a superior alternative to scaffolding in providing access and a work surface while finishing or renovating the exterior of buildings. Although the work platform has been used successfully in Europe, it is a fairly recent product in the United States. There are several different manufacturers and competitors. Currently we are covering all of New England and New York, with expansion into Washington DC area. The addition of the work platforms will help to stabilize sales level since these machines are used extensively for renovations which usually take place during downturns in building cycles
JC & E has had a long-standing history of management. Louis Julian was succeeded by his son Robert, who led the company from 1969 until 2000. In February of that year, ownership passed onto Robert’s three sons, Christopher, Michael and Gregory. These three have continued the family history of high service, responsive innovation and commitment to quality.
Christopher C. Julian successfully attended Brown University, majoring in applied mathematics and engineering. Following his graduation in 1986, he joined his father at JC & E, working in the fields of management, product development and project management. In 2000, he became the President of the company. Adept at mixing his academic qualifications with his years of practical experience, Chris has a strong record of product development and problem solving skills, so necessary for serving the needs of modern industry.
Michael L. Julian is Vice-President and Treasurer. Educated at the Universities of Arizona and Massachusetts, Michael combines a sound practical knowledge with strong managerial skills. Prior to rejoining the company in 1999, Michael had a successful career in the Restaurant management business in Aspen, Colorado. Michael oversees the day to day operations and yard management, as well as promotional aspects of the company.
Gregory L. Julian is the third member of the team. Following a successful career in advertising and publishing, Greg joined the company in 2000. His computer background has proven an asset for the company, especially in providing detailed project layouts for contractors and owners. His prime focus is sales, estimating and project preparation.
